How Sutton United Became a Community Giant
Sutton United FC may be famous for giant-killing cup runs, promotions and unforgettable moments on the pitch, but some of the club’s greatest achievements have taken place away from the spotlight.
In this special episode of the Sutton United Podcast, host Mike Dowling is joined by Sutton United Foundation’s Head of Disability Football, Steve King, to explore the incredible story behind one of the country’s most respected disability football programmes.
Steve’s connection with Sutton United began as a young supporter, listening to the roar from Gander Green Lane in 1975. His journey would eventually lead him to help create opportunities that have transformed the lives of hundreds of players and their families.
The conversation takes us from the programme’s muddy beginnings at Collingwood Recreation Ground through to national and international competitions, recognition as London Football Project of the Year, and the recent success of Sutton United’s Cerebral Palsy team.
But this story is about much more than football results or trophies.
Steve talks about the people who have helped build the programme, the dedication of its volunteers and why so many players and families describe Sutton United as feeling like a family. He also explains why true success cannot simply be measured by medals, it can be found in confidence, friendship, belonging and the opportunities created for people who may previously have felt excluded from the game.
It is an honest, inspiring and fascinating conversation that demonstrates the power football has to bring people together and genuinely change lives.
Whether you are a member of the Amber Army, connected to the Sutton United Foundation or simply interested in how sport can make a lasting difference within a community, this is a podcast well worth watching.
