Sutton United CP team crowned National Cerebral Palsy Shield winners in debut season

Sutton United’s Cerebral Palsy team celebrated a landmark moment in their inaugural season by lifting the National Cerebral Palsy Shield after an outstanding day of football against Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea.

The newly formed side showed great determination, quality and togetherness throughout the competition, securing two impressive victories to bring home their first piece of silverware.

The opening match of the day saw Sutton take on Brighton & Hove Albion, with the U’s earning a brilliant 2-1 win. Goals from Ashley Cunliffe and Reuben Taylor-West proved decisive in a hard-fought contest, with the result confirming the Shield for Sutton.

With the trophy already secured, Sutton finished the day in style against Chelsea, producing another superb performance to run out 3-1 winners. Callum Christie opened the scoring before further goals from Hassan Dabre and Ned Kelly sealed a memorable victory and rounded off a fantastic afternoon for the squad.

The success marks a huge milestone for the team and for everyone involved in developing Cerebral Palsy football at Sutton United. It is a reward for the commitment of the players, staff and the wider club, who have worked hard to establish the side and build something special in such a short space of time.

Head of CP Football Glen May reflected on the achievement after the matches, saying:

“The club have been so supportive in firstly setting the team up and then throughout the season. The things that I’ve asked to be put in place to help the lads get this sort of reward, they’ve been behind us all the way, which is fantastic. I couldn’t have asked for more really.”

The National Cerebral Palsy Shield success is another proud step forward for Sutton United Foundation as we continue to create opportunities in disability football and ensure more players can enjoy the game, represent the badge and achieve memorable moments like this one.

Congratulations to the players and everyone who has played a part in this brilliant achievement.
